HED-ZWS-1 Automatic Plant Water Potential Meter

    Product Introduction
The HED-ZWS-1 Automatic Plant Water Potential Meter is an analytical instrument designed to measure plant water potential and water status. It can also be used to obtain xylem sap from pressurized plant tissues for subsequent component analysis.
By measuring plant water potential, researchers can investigate plant water relations, plant–environment interactions, water transport, drought response, and crop water status. The instrument is widely applicable to research and teaching in plant physiology, ecology, agronomy, forestry, grassland science, and related fields.
With automatic measurement, rapid detection, data storage, USB data transfer, and PC-based analysis, the HED-ZWS-1 supports both indoor laboratory testing and outdoor/field measurements.

    Performance Features
    •    Large LCD display with a full Chinese menu for straightforward operation.
    •    Automatic and manual measurement modes selectable with one key.
    •    Dual measurement units: MPa and Bar.
    •  Direct water potential reading: The pressure value displayed on the LCD represents the current plant water potential.
    •    Large data storage capacity: Stores up to 4,000 measurement records.
    •    One-key data deletion for convenient data management.
    •    USB data transfer to a computer.
    •   PC software analysis: Upper-computer software can automatically analyze uploaded measurement data.
    •    Report-based data viewing: Stored records can be reviewed as reports.
    •   Time-period query: Measurement records can be searched by selected time periods.
    •   Excel backup: Stored measurement records can be exported and backed up in Excel format.
    • Portable field design: Suitable for laboratory, outdoor, and field measurements.
    •  Rechargeable lithium battery: Supports portable operation and includes a clock function.

    Working Principle
Plants continuously absorb water from the soil through their roots while losing water to the atmosphere through transpiration from their leaves. This creates a water potential gradient within the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum, with corresponding gradients from roots to stems and leaves.
Water in the plant xylem is therefore maintained under tension as it is transported upward. When a plant leaf or branch is cut, the tensioned water column in the xylem is disturbed and the water column retracts from the cut surface.
For measurement, the cut plant material is placed inside the instrument's pressure chamber, while the cut end is exposed outside the chamber and sealed around the chamber opening. Pressure is then gradually applied to the sample.
As pressure increases, the tension in the plant tissue is progressively balanced. When the xylem water reaches the cut surface, a small amount of water emerges from the cut end. The instrument's water-droplet detection probe automatically detects the emerging droplet and locks the measurement data.
The pressure value at this equilibrium point is used as the plant water potential value and is displayed directly by the instrument.
